Written and produced by Berry Gordy Jr. himself, "Do You Love Me" seems so basic, so crude, that it's easy to miss just how cleverly constructed the record really is -- its lovelorn spoken introduction deceptively sets the stage for a tearjerker ballad instead of the celebratory stomp which really follows, and with its false ending, the song.
